How can I overcome the dark night of the soul?

Be strong

The dark night of the soul isn’t for the faint of heart. You experience it for a reason, and that reason is for you to be awakened to the light of your soul. For when your soul shines the light, you must be strong enough to recognize the light even in the depths of darkness. Be strong enough to do the inner work, embrace your shadow self, and follow the light within. Be strong enough to share and ask for help. If you’re in the search for meaning, you’re in for an adventure.

Be patient

The dark night of the soul happens to teach you patience. Being patient doesn’t mean passively waiting—it means letting go of control and trusting the process. If you keep asking yourself how much longer you have to endure this darkness, you’ll only be given more time. So instead of focusing on time, trust. Trust that if there’s a start, there’s always an end. Trust that you’ve got this. When you experience the death of ego, you welcome the birth of enlightenment.

Be kind

The dark night of the soul won’t lighten up until you learn to be kind to yourself. Until you’re committed to yourself. Until you treat yourself with compassion. Everything else—your love for others, your contributions to humanity, your sense of belonging—begins with the unconditional love you nurture within.

Be playful

The dark night of the soul can be fun, too. In fact, you can make it fun. Keep breathing—it’s the only purpose you need to fulfill; the rest is play. Shake it off. Laugh out loud. Wink at life and enjoy the ride ;) While this might not be something you’re prepared for, it will completely purify and transform you, and change the course of your life.

Be hopeful

The dark night of the soul isn’t a curse—it’s a blessing in disguise. Don’t give up hope—instead, cultivate it. This dark night is the bridge between your past and your future—from suffering and internal struggle to transcendence and inner peace. For when you reach the other side, all that remains is tranquility and pure bliss. You might not miss the dark night of the soul, but you will be thankful for the ride.
