What yoga is not

If you know me, you probably know I can talk endlessly about how yoga has changed my life. But setting aside what yoga is (which I find impossible to condense within the limit of a few thousand words), I also love yoga for what it is not.

 Yoga isn’t a competition.

Everyone’s journey is different, but anyone who practices yoga for more than just the physical benefits knows that it’s not about trying to get ahead of others. On the contrary, it’s about learning to understand our own physical body, mind, and soul so that we can align within ourselves. The moment we try to compete with others, we lose touch with our true practice.

 Yoga isn’t superficial.

Regardless of how far we are in our journeys, yoga is not performative. It’s not acrobatics. It’s not about trying to look perfect or be perfect. It’s about focusing on the present moment and exploring its depth. And through that depth, we learn about ourselves and experience oneness. Who we are on the mat aligns with who we are off the mat.

 Yoga isn’t about instant gratification.

The path isn’t straight. There are twists and turns, just as we need to navigate within ourselves in the journey of self-study. It teaches us to slow down and stay grounded. One step at a time, we learn our limitations yet wake up to the realization that we’re limitless.

🌱 Fun fact:

I recorded this video on a day when my body felt stiff and everything seemed out of sync. I couldn’t stretch like I usually do. My mind felt distant. My soul felt detached. Not every day feels the same—it’s impossible to be at 100% all the time. But those days, I’ve learned, are when I need yoga the most 🧘‍♀️💗
